Let’s think about Freedom and Peace

What is freedom, really? And why is peace so important? What does it mean to you? Or what does it mean for your community?

To inspire one another and to connect around these themes, the Caribbean Freedom Meals are launching a HAIKU competition this year.

What is a Haiku?

A Haiku is a short poetic form from Japan that has become known worldwide. It usually consists of three lines with a fixed rhythm of syllables (5–7–5).

We love the Haiku form on our islands because people here often enjoy short, vivid language that captures nature, island life, and emotions.

Example of a Haiku

A breath of freedom,

silence after storms of strife

peace grows in the light.

Vrije ademtocht,

stilte na de storm van strijd

vrede groeit in licht.

Everyone can submit a Haiku!

We will collect the most beautiful Haikus and publish them so they can be read for inspiration at all Freedom Meals in the Caribbean.

The most beautiful Haiku will be featured this year on the Freedom Meals billboard on your island.

This way, we use our own strength to uplift and connect one another.

Each year, a renowned chef creates a special Freedom Soup especially for the Freedom Meals. This soup is shared across the entire Dutch Kingdom.

In the European Netherlands as well as on our Caribbean islands people can sit down together, enjoy the same meaningful meal, and open up conversations about Freedom and Peace.

Kòki di Freedom Soup 2026

De zevende editie van de Vrijheidssoep wordt dit jaar gekookt door chef Janny van der Heijden. Janny van der Heijden is een culinaire alleskunner: kookboekenauteur, programmamaker en geliefd jurylid van Heel Holland Bakt.

Voor Janny draait vrijheid om één ding: verbinding. Elkaar zien, horen en respecteren en volgens haar gebeurt dat nergens beter dan aan de eettafel. Precies daarom sluit haar visie zo mooi aan bij de Vrijheidsmaaltijden, waar mensen door het hele land samenkomen om soep te eten en verhalen over vrijheid en onvrijheid te delen.

De soep wordt in aanloop naar Bevrijdingsdag in blik verspreid en kan door iedereen op 5 mei worden gemaakt en gegeten tijdens Vrijheidsmaaltijden die door het hele Koninkrijk georganiseerd worden. Het recept wordt vrijgegeven op onze socials.

The war was tangible and noticeable on the Dutch Caribbean islands

On 4 May, we reflect on the battles that were fought, including here on our islands. The refineries in Aruba and Curaçao played a major role in this. During the oil transports to the Allies, 276 of our people lost their lives as a result of shelling of the ships by the Germans.

On the islands themselves, the blackout was in effect. People then had to live in darkness for the five years of the war. We are proud that eyewitnesses from that time are sharing their stories.
